Most countries have a 24-48h clause to allow cross border commerce / commuting to continue. I do not know for the Netherlands, but you can enteleave Belgium for 48h before the quarantine rules would kick in. For Germany it is 24h. Thus, you should be fine with collecting it from Maastricht, doing some more shopping if wanted, and going back the same day - but please verify the rules in the Netherlands.

Is it possible for Dutch people to travel to Switzerland?

I'm very confused by this story, which seems to say that (until recent events this week) British skiers had been merrily travelling to Verbier and skiing. Many British people apparently spent Christmas skiing in Verbier.
My understanding (reinforced by dire warnings issued by redditors here) was that we could not leave the country by any means.
Can Dutch citizens go skiing in Switzerland or not? Does anyone have accurate knowledge relating to this? (Please, no opinions!)
Official travel advice on Switzerland:
Foreign travel is a risk for the spread of the Covid-19 virus. Countries may also suddenly take measures that make entry and/or departure difficult or even impossible. The Dutch cabinet strongly advises citizens NOT to travel abroad unless strictly necessary.
Do you want to enter the Netherlands from Switzerland? Then from Tuesday 29 December 2020 at 00.00 hours in many cases you will have to show a negative COVID-19 test result upon arrival in the Netherlands by plane, international train or bus connection or ship. This is one of the Dutch measures to prevent the import and spread of the coronavirus.
Note: The coronavirus is not yet under control in the Netherlands and many other countries. Therefore, stay at home as much as possible. Do not make and book trips abroad until mid-March 2021, unless strictly necessary.
Throughout Switzerland the number of coronavirus infections is high. The color code of the country is therefore 'orange' (only necessary trips). Travel to Switzerland only if necessary, not for tourism or winter sports. After a stay in Switzerland you will go into home quarantine for 10 days on your return to the Netherlands. For more information, also for entry restrictions, see the section 'Coronavirus'.

Entitled/racist Japanese salesman wanted to send me to a gas chamber, but he spoke a little.... to loud ;)

Since I am positively tested on Corona and I have to be quarantined, I'd like to share a story from a few years ago just to pass the time. Note that the things that where said are all roughly translated from Japanese unless otherwise stated.
I'm originally from the Netherlands, but I moved to Japan 18 years ago and all I can say, Japan is a really nice place if you know where to find work. I don't look Japanese but I'm well mannered, follow Japanese traditions and etiquettes well and I toke the surname of my Japanese wife (since my surname is unpronounceable in Japanese, and I didn't want to bother my wife, my kids and the Japanese people with a unpronounceable name). So basically I'm as Japanese as a foreigner can be I guess (tough I still do some Dutch things together with others like baking oil balls during new year and treat my staff pepernoten on sinterklaas)
So after I had a business meeting in Tokyo, and after that was concluded I decided to eat some Ramen at a local Ramen shop (I just like the more low-key food stands). It was a small scale ramen shop which had a note ''no foreigners allowed''. (you see these signs more than you think on these smaller shops and stands, but in most cases, the owners put these posters on the stand because the owners can't speak English, so a lot of times, if you speak Japanese, you're allowed) I went in anyway since I (kinda) know the owner and it was empty with only one other guy sitting there. I greeted the owner and orders my bowl of Ramen when the Entitle Japanese salesman (I will call him ES) in a snobby voice said:
ES: ''excuse me, but what is this... gaijin (a foul word for ''foreigner'') doing here in this shop.
ME: Uhm, I'm just ordering a bowl of Ramen. They are the best in town.
**ES: (**in bad ''Engrish'') I not talking to you filth (in Japanese) I was asking the shop owner, you had a note on your door stating you do not allow foreigner
At this point I started to secretly film this since I wasn't sure that if things would go out of hand, the shop owner would be on my side. And the Japanese police tends to believe natives before foreigners (idk if filming is even allowed, but hey proof is proof)
ME: eehm, I can hear what you say, I speak Japanese to you know....
ES: SHUT UP you filth, do you know how important I am, I work at *great Japanese department store office* and I work as a salesman there, every day I make sure people got what they need. I'm responsible for 18 million people to get goods, something YOU can never do.
Me: OK (in a manner like One Punch Man)
Shop owner: Please calm down, I have no problem with people who speak Japanese, I just can't deal with foreigners who can't speak Japanese during rush hours, they sadly lose me money
ES: A foreigner is a foreigner. It doesn't matter if a Neanderthal knows how to speak our beautiful language, he is still a gaijin.
ME: Well, I'm actually a Japanese citizen, I relinquished my Dutch citizenship years ago to become a Japanese citizen, I'm Japanese now if you like it or not.
ES: You are not Japanese, and you will never be, our race will stay clean.
At this point, I decided to stop being polite and just troll the fuck out of him.
ME: Oh I have a Japanese wife you know. I have 7 kids (I actually have 2, but whatever) My oldest daughter is president of the archer club (this was true, but I can't remember if she was at the time this happend) and my third son wanted to become a monk (this was a lie, I don't even have a sun anyway).
ES: You filthy foreigners steal all of our wife, it's your fault I don't have a wife and family
ME: *hysterical laughter* Maybe cuz you're a dick
ES: Excuse me you rude ass gaijin
ME: what, Never hard to take the truth, you know how I got her, by being polite, being supportive and let her live the life she wants. Dicks like you only tell woman to stay home, take care of the children and shut up.
ES: THIS IS WHAT I MEAN, you gaijins disgrace our traditions
ME: Are you serious?
ES: What? it is the role of woman to birth children and stay at home, you Americans taught our woman otherwise and now we have a low birthrate.
ME: Funny, I don't remember the Netherlands being in the US, but I can speak like a American redneck if you want.
ES: America, Netherlands, Germany, Sweden. It doesn't matter. You whites destroy everything beautiful in this world.
ME: in yank voice: I ain't know, but ya gonna relax. Hey ever shot a cold pyton before? The best gun ya can shoot, tough at a distance of 12 gallons i prefer a Deagle, recently bought a M&P15 with scope, great to use against enemies of the free world!
ES: SHUT UP
Me: in yank voice: You're going to see the superbowl tonight motherfucker? I have 10 inches of diet coke and 6 feet of McDonalds, hey did you know my Nascar drove 200.000 yards and our proud president Donald J Trump gave me the medal of patriotic freedom (idk I was just using random American terms at this point)
ES: ARRRHRHHHH YOU FUCKING GAIJINS SHOULD ALL BE GASSED TO DEAD, YOU SHOULD ALL BE COLLECTED AND GO IN A GAS CHAMBER, YOUR BONES WILL BE USED TO STRENGTHEN OUR ROAD AND WE WILL EXTERMINATE ALL FILTH IN OUR COUNTRY.
Honestly I was shocked, I didn't expect him being this extreme. I just hoped he would walk out like the loser he was, oh well, this guy wanted to fight, but I honestly didn't want to. The shop owner at this point was calling the cops and removed his ''no foreigners allowed'' sign (cuz it's technically illegal). But somehow we didn't throw punches. He was still shouting racists things and he still acted entitled. But the cops came in and of course:
ES: I was assaulted by that man, arrest him please.
Luckily the shop owner vowed for me and the cops took him away, but not without the cherry on top:
When the cops asked his name, he said his name, but the funny thing is......
I HAVE THE SAME SURNAME AS HIM!
And not only that, my wife's surname is kinda a hystorical name derived from samurai. So when I heard his name I said
''oh hey, my name is also *my surname''
This is when the guy flipped even more, and he said racist things again and wished me again in the gas chamber...... But in his rage he somehow forgot there was...... actual police next to him..... So yeah, this guy was taken to the police office and got a fine. Later I heard he was fired from his job.
Out of gratitude for helping me out (and I guess as apology for letting this thing get out of hand), I translated the shop owner menu into English and suggested some sort of system that if foreigners order stuff, it will go smoothly. Nowadays the shop owner makes a small extra buck thanks to it.
Oh well, all's well ends well right. Tough do note, some things are rough to translate, and it happened 3 years ago, so I might have missed some details/some things might sound weird and unbelievable.
Edit: I mean 18 years, not 8 years lol.
Edit 2: Well, I guess this got popular for my first post...... Well thanks for the support guys, but also thanks for the criticism. Some of the criticism helped me to remember a few details about this whole thing, and for that I'm honestly grateful. As a thank you I cleaned this post a little bit. Yeah English is my third language so I might make a mistake here and there, also writing while being sick doesn't help either 0/10 can't recommand.

Wtf is going on with the Dutch?

Hey, I'm an American-born expat who moved here in late 2019 after ten+ years living in Germany. Lockdown began before I really got oriented and certainly before I was integrated. From my perspective, I have been finding the Dutch Corona response illogical, unscientific, overly preoccupied with economic and emotional considerations, and generally, as the Germans would say generally, asozial. I was wondering if someone could explain to me from a cultural-analytical perspective wtf is going on here. This is just like... The biggest culture shock of my life - - and I've been living abroad for my entire adult life....
Specifically : 1) Why is the RVIM at least 6-9+ months behind their peers (WHO, Robert Koch, CDC, NHS) in accepting scientific evidence about e.g. Masks, spread via aerosols, risk for pregnant women, asymptomatic spread, etc? 2) What logic is used for decision making about the virus? Why the f*** is the bowling alley near my house still open???? Why does my yoga studio think it is a reasonable policy to require masks only until you've set up your mat (in the windowless room), but once you're on your mat you can take your mask off???? Why aren't the employees at the living assistance center for older people with serious physical and mental health issues wearing face masks???? 3) why won't people hold each other accountable for keeping the community safe? Do the Dutch not have a tradition of a Sozialstaat? Why is avoiding conflict more important than asking each to protect vulnerable people by wearing masks? Thinking of the mass refusal to enforce the new mask mandate here.... 4) Why were doctors I had to visit at both the ER and the huisarts not wearing face asks after the WHO began recommending them in the spring and production had picked up so shortages weren't a problem anymore? How can I trust a doctor whose medical references seem limited to official Dutch language sources (RVIM)? I know that might sound snobby, but more people live in NYC than in this whole country, so it seems reasonable to expect Dutch scientists to look at least somewhat internationally for data, research, etc. 5) why is mental health always pinned to the top of every news feed about corona - - including this reddit group? It looks to me like the Dutch seem to care more about feeling happy than about scientific reality..... Mental health is super important, but in English and German contexts mental health is not pinned to the very top of the corona discussion the way it is in Dutch..... What's up with that? 6) I've heard a number of rumors that kind of shock me but I don't know how to verify them: A) that the big reason strict measures aren't coming is because politicians don't want to do anything unpopular / unpleasant before the elections in March. B) that Dutch young people who have direct contact with a confirmed coronavirus case but who are without symptoms are told they need neither to get a test nor to quarantine. C) That people aren't wearing masks in line while waiting for coronavirus tests D) that Dutch doctors encourage older people with symptoms to stay home instead of going to hospitals because "nothing can be done for them", and that these deaths don't count in the official numbers. My Dutch is shaky, but I can read things by leaning on my German.... But I don't have the language skills yet to go on a Dutch - language fact finding mission... So if anyone has any solid information on these issues, I'd very much like to read it...
Anyway, basically I really do not understand the cultural values or thought processes driving these things. Maybe someone who has spent time in Germany / the US can help explain how the Dutch think.....and generally wtf is going on.
Thanks for helping me make sense of my neighbors. I feel like I've fallen down a wormhole and landed in a universe where math and science work differently.... I'm just very confused.
Next day edit: thanks everyone who has been writing me about this. Your collective openness and kindness are a reflection of what I enjoy most about the Netherlands :). Especially considering the frustration reflected in the polemic formulation of my original post, everyone has been generous, sincere, and thoughtful in their replies. I just wanted to recommend your various comments to other readers. I think this is a conversation worth the investment of a little reading and reflecting, no matter what our backgrounds or home addresses are.

Jan/18/2021 news: __ Russian MFA Lavrov about Artsakh's legal status, it joining Russia, POWs, secret agreement, etc. __ "Universal healthcare" stats: how many free cancer, heart, stroke, surgeries & subsidized medical visits? __ Police reforms: academy training begins __ Artsakh residents __ more

Your 11-minute Monday report in 2740 words.

Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov about POWs & Hadrut strip incident:

We want to close the issue of captives. We want the return to be organized based on the all-for-all principle. The topic of POWs took up a significant portion of the January 11th negotiations between leaders of Armenia-Azerbaijan-Russia.
The Armenian side faced more challenges. Both sides had to form a list of missing people. Azerbaijan provided a small list and they were all found a returned. In the initial period, the list of missing people provided by Armenia was not provided immediately and was incomplete.
The main issue now is the December event in the Hadrut region where 62 Armenian soldiers were captured (Khtsaberd village incident). Azerbaijan claims that since those soldiers were stationed in Hadrut after the ceasefire, they aren't POWs and should go through different legal procedures in Azeri courts. The Russian government, nevertheless, wants to discuss this topic as part of the all-for-all POW swap process.
We spoke with Armenian MFA to clarify the final list of POWs and there appear to be more than 62. The three parties are currently clarifying the names and locations of people one-by-one.
(Context: unknown number of people were being held captive by Azerbaijan after the war. Then 62 more soldiers were captured during Hadrut skirmishes. It's unclear how many POWs Azerbaijan holds. They intentionally delay the process, while Armenia has already agreed to an all-for-all swap.)
https://armenpress.am/arm/news/1040519.html , https://www.panarmenian.net/arm/news/289515/
Deputy PM Avinyan was asked to comment: Armenia approaches any issue of POW responsibly, refraining from formulations that could harm the process of quick and safe repatriation.
As for the list of POWs submitted by the Armenian side, they were submitted regularly in several stages. We submitted the full list to Russia and Red Cross in December.

Russian MFA Lavrov about Artsakh's legal status & "Artsakh joining Russia":

The issue of Karabakh's legal status is left to be resolved in the future because there are disagreements by Armenia and Azerbaijan today, so the three states decided to leave it for later. OSCE Minsk Group should take part in that process. The co-chairs are in touch with both sides and they are preparing to make visits.
The sooner Armenia and Azerbaijan express readiness to regulate daily life between the two people, the sooner Karabakh's status issue will be resolved.
The idea that Karabakh can be part of Russia is "exotic". We have no such intentions. I'd like to remind you that not even Armenia has officially recognized the independence of Karabakh.
The area where the peacekeeping mission is located is the area of responsibility of the peacekeeping contingent. We're discussing humanitarian and transportation topics.

Russian MFA Lavrov about rumors of "secret agreements":

There were no secret protocols in the November 9th and January 11th statements.
https://factor.am/329054.html

Russian MFA Lavrov about Azeri complaints over Armenian govt officials' visit to Artsakh:

The November 9th statement states that a connection between Armenia and Karabakh will be provided through the Lachin corridor. No one has ever denied a connection between Karabakh and Armenia. The issue of separating Armenia and Karabakh has never been raised during the past decades of negotiations. Armenian politicians are involved with providing humanitarian aid to Artsakh, and it would be strange if Azerbaijan responded to it negatively.
A similar reliable connection will be established between Azerbaijan and Nakhijevan, as stated by the November 9th Statement.

search operations

The search crews discovered the bodies of three soldiers in Jabrayil and Kubatlu regions today. Two of them will need DNA analysis for identification. 1238 bodies have been found since the ceasefire. Many are yet to be identified.

official calls for sanctions against Aliyev

Tigran Balayan, an MFA official and ambassador to the Netherlands said, "Two months ago, the Council of the European Union released a statement, urging both sides to take steps to strengthen ceasefire in Nagorno Karabakh. To this day, the Aliyev regime is doing the opposite. The only option is sanctions against Aliyev."

legal action against Armenophobia in Azerbaijan

Vladimir Vardanyan, the head of Parliamentary State & Legal Affairs Committee said, "The topic of POW is a priority for us. The government has started legal proceedings in connection with the atmosphere of hatred that is spreading in Azerbaijan. These legal processes have been talked about in professional platforms for more than 10 years. This government has finally found the courage to launch these processes while realizing the complications associated with it."

Cpt. Davit Hovhannesi Sajhumyan secured his combat unit with radio communication tools and cameras.
Major Lendrush Norayri Khachatryan skillfully lead his unit and caused heavy damage to the enemy.

Parliament held a session

The ruling party voted against the LHK bill that would discuss the "legality of Pashinyan's signature under November 9th statement". They also voted against a bill about PM's resignation.
https://factor.am/328883.html
Ind. MP Babajanyan: Aliyev recently claimed he would wage another war and win if Armenia planned revanche. Armenia should stop all political discussions with Azerbaijan until Aliyev apologized to the Artsakh population for its genocidal behavior.
Meanwhile, the [former regime's] 16 political parties rushed to give interviews to Russian outlets claiming that "Armenia isn't planing a revanche". Dear government, don't be afraid of the word "revanche", and not-so-dear 16 political parties, do not be terrified of the word "revanche". Armenia will have a revanche but it will be in the form of Armenia strengthening its economy and sovereignty with the help of new partners.
https://factor.am/328916.html
BHK MP Zohrabyan believes the Parliament should not discuss any resolutions for now. "The only topic should be Pashinyan's resignation." BHK MPs gave speeches with demands for PM's resignation.
QP MP criticized the opposition LHK and BHK for leaving the room "after staging a show".
https://armenpress.am/arm/news/1040470.html , https://factor.am/328990.html
The Parliament discussed several bills about establishing new anti-corruption investigative committees and courts, new transparency requirements for officials to disclose large transactions, penalizing businesses for repeatedly ignoring IRS agent's instructions, etc.
These bills are yet to be finalized and approved. Details about some of them can be found in my older posts. More on them later.

trial resumes for Hrayr Tovmasyan, ex-chief of Constitutional Court

Context: Hrayr Tovmasyan served as HHK's Justice Minister before joining the Parliament as HHK MP. In 2018, HHK appointed Tovmasyan as Constitutional Court judge, in a process that prompted a felony investigation by the Pashinyan administration, amid accusations that HHK falsified documents to change dates to allow Tovmasyan to be appointed as a judge under Old Constitution's terms, so he would serve lifetime (new constitution would severely limit the term). Tovmasyan was later charged with a case relating to his time as Justice Minister. He and his subordinate godson Panosyan were charged with pressuring notaries to legalize properties allegedly stolen by Tovmasyan and registered under someone else's name.
The trial for Tovmasyan and his godson Panosyan resumed today. The defense asked the court to dismiss the prosecutor for "unprofessional lexicon". The court rejected the plea.

In late-2019, heart surgeries became free. 4340 surgeries have been conducted since then.
Beginning mid-2019, some 400,000 low-income citizens became qualified for an "improved subsidized healthcare package", including 18 types of modern expensive procedures.

Does anyone have experience visiting their SO in Germany during the pandemic under the “durable relationship” exemption?

Hi everyone! I’m (20F) in the US right now and in a LDR with my SO (28M) who lives in Germany. We finally were able to make plans to see each other for the first time in 7 months in late November. There is a travel ban exception for people entering Germany from third party countries who are in a durable relationship with a German citizen which we qualify for. Unfortunately though there is no guarantee that the border security will accept this exemption and let me in, but if I bring all the paperwork required, theoretically they should let me in.
Does anyone have experience with this??? It would give me so much more hope if I could hear some people who have done this and been let in, I am just so scared I’m going to get there and they turn me away especially with their recent lockdown.
Any advice and experiences will be much appreciated!!! I know a few other European counties have similar exceptions so I’d love to hear about those too!

Asian countries still doing right: "Japan bans entry from all countries to block new strain's spread"

https://asia.nikkei.com/Spotlight/Coronavirus/Japan-bans-entry-from-all-countries-to-block-new-strain-s-spread
Japan should never have eased the travel restrictions in the first place. (Since October, Japan has allowed entry by those staying for at least three months on the condition that they quarantine for 14 days - still very restrictive, much more-so than Western countries, but less so than earlier in the year.)
Un-hobbled by sentimental nonsense, some countries continue to do the right thing to protect their citizens.
Japan will ban entry from all countries to prevent the spread of the more contagious U.K. strain of the coronavirus, the government announced Saturday.
The ban takes effect Monday and continues through the end of January. Japanese nationals and foreigners living in Japan will be permitted to return to the country. A 14-day quarantine request will apply to all without exception.
Japan currently bans entry from 152 nations, but since October, it has allowed in foreign students or business professionals planning long-term stays. Now the issuance of those visas will be suspended, but those who have already acquired visas can enter even after Monday.
Meanwhile, COVID-19 deaths per 100K population:

Surveillance and Testing Report and Contact Tracing Addendum
Two reports have been released today; one regarding surveillance and testing, and the other regarding contract tracing.
Of 13 recommendations in the Surveillance and Testing Report, all have been addressed, and actions have either already been implemented or are underway.
The Contact Tracing Addendum includes 15 recommendations and a response to each recommendation is underway.
Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield said the health system had responded on an unprecedented scale at speed to eliminate COVID-19 from our communities.
“The response has not been without flaws, but the Ministry and wider system have learnt, reviewed and adjusted along the way to continually improve our response.
“New Zealanders should have confidence that we have responded to four outbreaks since the Auckland August cluster without needing to change Alert Levels – this is a reflection of the strengthened systems that have adapted since the beginning of the pandemic.”
Infection prevention and control audits of managed isolation and quarantine facilities
The Ministry of Health has today released the results of two audits into infection prevention and control (IPC) at all 32 managed isolation and quarantine (MIQ) facilities around New Zealand.
IPC measures include physical distancing, use of PPE, testing, daily health checks, and cleaning and maintenance processes.
MIQ facilities are an important part of our border measures to keep COVID-19 out of the community. It’s critical to the health of the country that MIQ facilities are well-maintained and any infection brought in by people entering New Zealand cannot spread into the community.
The IPC requirements are captured in a set of Standard Operating Procedures used by all the MIQ facilities, taking into account their individual circumstances.
The requirements are continually updated to reflect our evolving understanding of how the virus works and the latest expert health advice.
The majority of recommendations for improvement in both audits were addressed within two weeks of the findings.
These audits will serve as a baseline for future audits, which will be conducted regularly.
The audit results are available on the Ministry’s website.

Our daily update is published. States reported 1.9M tests, 174K cases, and 3,577 deaths. 114k people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in the US. Only two weeks ago, that number was 131k.

The weekly view today shows cases down 21%, with more modest but very welcome drops in hospitalizations and deaths. The 7-day average for cases has returned to pre-Thanksgiving levels. Tests are slightly down, possibly because most of the backlogs have now been resolved.

The reporting backlogs from Nov and Dec holidays make the past six weeks of case numbers look jumpy, but the drop we’re seeing now is very encouraging—though we’re still seeing almost three times as many new cases each day as we did at the summer peak.

There are almost exactly twice as many people in the hospital with COVID-19 now as there were at the peak of the previous two surges, but hospitalizations are dropping very quickly.

Information

With the launch of Lithuania-Turkey-Azeri LNG Deal and Expansion of our High Tech and Industry Parks we are returning to our role of being called the Baltic Tiger once more. This combined with a stable supply of vaccines has meant that our country has once more returned to normality, with quarantine finally over and cases being extremely rare.
The new initiative of providing E-Residences as well as loosening restrictions of immigrating to Lithuania from our neighbouring country like Belarus has pushed us to gain population instead of losing it, a phenomenon that we haven't seen for almost 28 Years. Generally, immigration has been stable going toe to toe with immigration. With UK leaving EU we have also seen a quadruple decline in emigrations to it, with many Lithuanians now choosing to only work abroad by taking contracts in Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Netherlands and France.

COVID - driving to Netherlands

Hi, by the end of the month I will help a friend relocate from Poland to Netherlands by driving a van with his stuff through Germany. My plan is to drop his belongings and leave the next day back home.
I wonder if i should expect any border checks and mandatory quarantine by doing so.

Netherlands to Germany Travel (U.K. national)

Situation: My partner’s family live in Cologne. She is a German national. I am a U.K. national. We have been trying to get to Germany for the past few months, so the in-laws can meet our son before his first birthday (born shortly before lockdown).
We can easily travel as far as the Netherlands (with negative COVID tests, travelling in our car to minimise contact with anyone not of our household). We’re aware that currently, I’m not allowed to travel to Germany (she and our son are, as returning German nationals).
Question: Practically speaking, does anyone have a sense of how likely it is that we will be stopped crossing the NL/DE border?
Thanks in advance.
N.B. I’m aware people will have opinions on whether this is a good idea, but bear in mind we will only be able to travel at all following the production of a negative test taken in the previous 48 hours. With a young child, we’ve practically been entirely in quarantine since March.
I’m also aware of borders officially opening on 6 jan, but the U.K. may prevent us travelling out before this time.
